UTSA Creating Opportunities for Outliers

Introduction

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has announced significant expansions to their cybersecurity and data sciences programs, providing new opportunities for outliers in the field. This initiative includes a $70 million investment approved by the University of Texas Board of Regents and a $15 million contribution from Graham Weston, founder of Rackspace.

What’s UTSA Doing?

UTSA is establishing two new facilities: the National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC) and the School of Data Science. These will be part of a larger effort to expand UTSA’s downtown campus, positioning the university as a leader in cybersecurity education.

The Silicon Valley of Cybersecurity and Data Science

San Antonio already has the second-largest concentration of cybersecurity and defense professionals in the U.S. With the 24th and 25th Air Force Wings based in the city, UTSA’s expansions will further cement San Antonio's position as a hub for cybersecurity.

Further Advantages

The presence of the 24th and 25th Air Force Wings brings a significant number of trained cybersecurity professionals to the area. Over 90% of cybersecurity companies in San Antonio are working on government contracts, creating a robust ecosystem for cybersecurity innovation.

Providing an Opportunity

UTSA’s initiative is likely to produce the next generation of cybersecurity leaders. By creating an environment that nurtures talent, UTSA is setting the stage for future outliers who will drive advancements in cybersecurity and data sciences.
